Luxury Airship Raided by
Noble-Backed Sky Pirates

Y'zel Tia, Foreign CorrespondentSEA OF CLOUDS — As Ishgard continues to rebuild and regrow, and its trade and industry thrive and expand, it was only a matter of time before desperate souls preyed upon the Holy See again. Yet in this shocking instance, the predator has come from within its own walls. The Cheval Blanche, a large luxury skyship, was raided by members of the Calamar Noir sky pirate crew. The skyship was hosting a "Gala of Technological Progress", exhibiting such marvels as new commercial airship engines, the latest advances in consumer technology, and even rare Allagan artifacts. The sky pirates attacked while the Cheval Blanche flew through the Sea of Clouds, with dozens of passengers on board drawn from the Eorzean elite. Three passengers were injured in the raid, but thankfully there were no casualties."This attack was an unprecedented blow to the march of progress," said Lady Tiphionne Alverais, primary financial backer of the Cheval Blanche's construction, and one of the Gala's organizers. Lady Alverais was taken hostage by the Calamar Noir, though she was unharmed, and soon after rescued by local adventurers. The Calamar Noir were subdued and turned over to the Temple Knights for arrest. While none of the stolen items have been recovered, many organizations, such as the Skysteel Manufactory, are offering to compensate investors for the loss, and prevent Lady Alverais from suffering the full damage of the robbery.

Above: Zigovali Rosestar, the detective who produced evidence of Lady Ilvaurette Garreau's involvement in the raid, speaking with Temple Knights in Ishgard.Yet the truth behind the attack was revealed the next day, thanks to the findings of Zigovali Rosestar, detective of the Rosestar Consulting Agency. According to his investigation, one Lady Ilvaurette Garreau was responsible for sponsoring the activities of the Calamar Noir, and had intended for Lady Alverais to be killed by the sky pirates. "Lady Garreau considered Lady Alverais a bitter rival," said Rosestar, "and sought to extract her vengance through this terrible ordeal."Temple Knights were dispatched to arrest Lady Garreau, but found that she had fled Ishgard during the night following the attack. Warrants for her arrest have been issued, and Ishgard is calling upon its allies in the Eorzean Alliance to extradite Lady Garreau immediately if she is found in their lands.

This one worked out well for us, but Ilvaurette's
going to be a problem in the future. –Z

Helene Gage, Staff WriterYou're an Ul'dahn native. Tell us more about your history here in the Jewel of the Desert.Well, to keep it short, I come off of Pearl Lane, as many did in the wake of the Calamity. I dabbled in adventuring, small business, and asceticism before settling on consultation. While I have ventured all across the star in the course of my wanderings and work, I will always return to my beloved Ul'dah. Was your early adventuring career where you began practicing magic? That is correct. I happened upon Sharlayan astromancy rather early on, and branched out from there.Well, one could assume you are some manner of red mage, by your attire, and by eyewitness accounts.I am not a "red mage" so much as I am a mage who happens to wear red. I am practiced in a number of disciplines: astromancy, thaumaturgy, arcanima, and a handful of more esoteric fields I will leave to the readers' imaginations. So you've been working as a private consultant in Ul'dah for some time. What brought about the start of your detective work?I have always been an inquisitive sort, I suppose. My work in creative solutions consultancy, it relies upon many of the same talents as investigative work. I simply expanded my services to include private investigation, yes? That would be your independent firm, Rosestar Consulting Agency. But you have other pursuits and enterprises. You run a shop just outside of town?Indeed! The First Step Mercantile, "Where Every Adventure Begins!" An adventuring outlet, run by my wife and I. I provide an assortment of alchemicals and arcane accoutrements, while she manages her boutique and takes apparel commissions. Would that I could state our operating times, but we move around so much with our other affairs, it is hard to say when we are formally open, yes?

So your wife is an adventuring sort as well?My wife, Melili Meli, is a brilliant woman. A master weaver chartered with Sunsilk Tapestries, but also an adventurer of the highest caliber. I cannot boast of my accomplishments without stating her invaluable contributions. She is my partner in all things, and without her, I would not be a fraction of the man I am today. We'll have to sit her down for an interview sometime, then.I cannot say she would be as enthusiastic for publicity as I, my friend.Back to you, then. You say you "dabbled" in adventuring. Are you still working as an adventurer? On occasion, and in my own manner. Please elaborate for our readers.I do not see what I do as "adventuring," not in the way one would regard it as with the Adventurers' Guild. What work within that way I wield, it is in the pursuit of my creative solutions, yes?You are an independent investigator, by your own admission. What drives you?All of my life, I have danced with truth. I have kept it at arm's length, I have spun it about, I have left it for other partners now and again. But for too long, I refused to embrace it, to treasure it, to find it in the common crowd. Of late, I have encountered a newfound yearning for the truth. Especially here, in Ul'dah. Some would say you're taking on a fool's quest, seeking the truth in Ul'dah. On the contrary, that is precisely why I must do so. Because in a city so afflicted by iniquity and misers, a single soul seeking sincerity is a sworn savior. It is, how you say... One of the core alchemical principles. One is all, all is one. The truth is in all of us, and we are all beholden to the truth. My job now, it is to hold accountable those who try to shirk that reality.

Word on the Street

Lidada Lida, ColumnistLidada Lida here! I've been keeping my ear to the ground as always, making sure I don't miss anything the beautiful sun-kissed cobbles of Ul'dah have to say about what's happening around town!A familiar name has been making it way around town, and the gossip following it is juicier than ever! So this issue, I'm taking another look at Zigovali Rosestar, Ul'dah's hottest new detective! Loyal readers may have already gotten the goods on the man in red in an earlier issue, so I hope you're ready to hear more of the WORD ON THE STREET!The Rosestar Consulting Agency has been making headlines in our dear Mythril Eye, more than once. But Rosestar's not hunting down petty thieves and Sapphire Avenure short-changers, oh no. It seems his choice of prey are those involved in corruption, fraud, or organized crime. The man's got a hefty appetite when it comes to his choice of criminal to case! In a city like Ul'dah, I'm sure this string of closed cases is making some people who lurk in the alleys nervous. Or, Traders forbid, some of those who reside on the Hustings Strip.I've heard a lot of people call Rosestar the "man in red," for an obvious reason. That crimson hat and coat are hard to miss! It's the sort of attire you'd expect from a red mage, but despite wielding magicks, and a fancy sword at that, Rosestar denies being a red mage. If it looks like a chocobo and it kwehs like a chocobo, then it must be a chocobo—or it's hiding some really juicy magical secrets! It's more than the hat and coat that's been seen around town. Some folks have been handed a red business card by the man. Potential clients, maybe? But a lot of these cards are getting passed around in the Quicksand, where lots of adventurers come to find friends and work. Is Rosestar looking for more than clients?Wish I had more to say, but that's all I've got this issue! Keep an ear to the ground, readers, and look forward to the next edition of WORD ON THE STREET!

Opinion: The Garlean Empire's New Legion

Arnauld Stout, ColumnistIt has been some years since the final unceremonious dissolution of the Garlean Empire, reduced to ashes beneath its own warlike ambitions. Even now, there remain Eorzean forces stationed in Garlemald, making sure that this cruel nation is never allowed to rear its ugly face again upon this star. But now is not the time for complacency; in fact, the true battle against Garlean dominion has just begun.More and more, magitek enters our lives. What was once relegated strict to instruments of war and destruction has expanded into the realm of domestic use. Look at how many homes now have such appliances as ceruleum-gas ovens, or automatic coffee-makers. Within a decade, we could be facing a revolution in our own kitchens, as everything is automated and performed by various magitek devices."How wonderful!" you might naively say, "Magitek shall replace manual labor, and make our lives brighter and more comforting!" WRONG, dear reader! What we are witnessing is the beginning of a technological takeover! Lest we forget, all of magitek originated in Garlemald, innovated purely for conquest and ruination. Do you honestly believe these products are made to make your lives easier? We are inviting the weapons of the enemy into our own homes! Such devastation is their intention, and you are paving the road for their own foul march.Reject the advent of advancement, loyal readers. Look to this latest tragedy in the Sea of Clouds, as people fight one another over these terrible spoils. This sort of bedlam and anarchy will soon erupt in our very homes, threaten the lives of our children, unless we reject all Garlean puppetry here and now.

((Depending on your character's own backstory, you may know more rumors, especially if you're Ul'dahn, a mage, or had a criminal past.))

Spell Cards

Magic for the masses! Only available through me! –Z

Spell cards are Zigovali's unique magical invention: thin crystals, finely engraved and resembling colorful stained glass. Every spell card is made of crystal, 3×5", and imbued with just enough aether and instruction to manifest a single instance of the spell depicted on the card's face.To use the spell card, focus upon how you wish the spell to manifest, then break the card. Spell card spells are not very powerful, roughly equivalent in strength to a typical Fire or Cure spell. Don't worry about breaking a card by accident; they are fairly sturdy, enough to hold up to casual wear and tear.Spell cards are only sold by Zigovali in Booster Packs, containing 3 spell cards. Roll /random 3 times to determine the cards pulled, with each digit determining the card's quality (1st digit), edition (2nd), and rarity (3rd). Zeroes are 10, and single- or double-digit rolls have leading zeroes.Every spell card also has a trade value, determined by its quality, edition, and rarity. Trade spell cards with others, or with Zigovali to get access to his wider stock!Ex.: You roll 69 with /random to pull a card from a Black I Booster Pack. You draw a Signed (10 from the leading 0) Foil (6) Thunder (9) card. The card's trade value is 10 (+5 Signed, +2 Foil, +3 Rare).

I'm a 30-whatever white guy that has been playing and RPing Zigo all the way since patch 3.1 in 2015. I love seeing what sort of misadventures I can get this bastard into, while at the same time leveling all jobs to cap, guiding sprouts, running my FC, and just trying to see as much of FFXIV as I can.Zigovali is often accompanied by an IC Anima minion. This is his familiar (and "secrefairy") Moneta, who is often quietly taking notes on a tiny clipboard. Feel free to interact with Moneta as well as with Zigovali! When it comes to lore compliance, I take a "lore-plausible" approach: if there's something official you can point to to back up something with your character, then I'm often happy to roll with it. Generally, I like trying to stay relatively close to lore, as it's easier to play along with others when we're all using more or less the same toys. Zigovali is happily married, so I am not seeking any IC romance. He is always willing and eager to make new friends, and even some rivals.I am not my character. Zigovali's words and actions are not my own, and should not be taken as any reflection of my OOC thoughts or opinions. Zigovali is a POC RPed by a white guy; I make no attempts to appropriate anything, and wholeheartedly reject and denounce orientalism in every form.
